HOW IT ALL STARTED

Originally Watton Service Station Ltd started life on the 22nd October 1958 in the High Street of Watton-at-Stone as a BP petrol filling station and vehicle motor engineers, by brothers in-law
Mr E Mead and Mr G Evans.

Extensive Development of the site in the early sixtys made way for a larger petrol sales area, with a small shop selling sweets and cigarettes, it was one of the first to sell ice creams.
A larger workshop, stores and vehicle sales show-room, allowed the acquisition of a BMC dealership.

After the demise of Leyland, the second-hand car sales were extended, and the workshop won a contract to repair British Aerospace Vehicles.

In the mid 1980's there was a management buyout by the current owners, and the side was again developed, a larger shop, a full canopy and carwash facilities were added.

As the millennium approached major changes were taking place, the sale of Rover to British Aerospace, Supermarkets selling petrol, government regulations and petrol industry changes all helped to make the site uneconomical. With great sadness a decision was made to sell the side and move to its current location. When the site was shut in 1998 it was one of the last to have attended petrol sales.

As the move was made the company was restructured, becoming a non limited co and the name shortened to WSS Cars.

After the retirement of John Meischke, The new and dynamic former apprentice Robin Salmon is now the proud owner of Watton Service Station.
